The Agro- ecological Association of Guardians of the Las Delicias
Mountains (APROMODE) has been given the task of conserving and managing
the area's Tropical Rainforest, allowing the community,
visitors and future generations to enjoy its natural resources. The
area features nature paths and waterfalls located in the community of
Las Delicias in the district of Changuinola, province of Bocas del
Toro. Along the length of the paths you can appreciate various tree
species such as laurel and Cedro Bateo. In the canopy you
will find a great range of small species including orchids, epiphytes,
parasites, heliconia. The fauna is also diverse and includes large
felines such as jaguar and puma, both which are on the path to
extinction. The area's birds are abundant and one can easily spot
parrots, toucans, and pavas and will also encounter poisonous frogs and
snakes.
Attractions:
Hiking and horseback through the nature paths that cross primary and
secondary forests in which you will see the great diversity of
plants and animals, motor boat trip along the Sixaola and Yorkin Rivers
that border Panama and Costa Rica, Lookout points that allow you to see
the Talamanca mountain Range and Sixaola River Valley, and various
waterfalls including the Colorado, which is a great place to cool off.
The Association offers lodging in a cabin built by the members
themselves, from reclaimed, locally milled lumber. Panamanian meals
prepared from locally, organically grown produce are prepared for
visitors.
How
to get there:
The most attractive way to
visit the area is as a stop on the way between Puerto Viejo / Limon and
Bocas del Toro:
On
your way to Costa Rica from Panama:
At the Changuinola Terminal take a taxi (30 minutes) to Guabito. In
Guabito cross the border to Sixaola in Costa Rica. In Sixaola Terminal
take bus to Bribri (1 hour). In Bribri take taxi
to Casse (8 minutes). In Chasse cross in boat (7am to
6pm) to Los Almacenes (2 minutes). Walk to Sergio's house (10 minutes).
On
your way to Panama from Costa Rica:
Take bus to Bribri (1 hour from Limon). In bribri take taxi to Chasse
(8 minutes). In Chasse cross in boat (7am to 6pm) to Los Almacenes ( 2
minutes). walk to Sergio's house (10 minutes).
From
Changuinola:
At the
Changuinola Terminal take the bus to Las Tablas (1 hour and a half) .
In las Tablas take a taxi to Las Delicias (1 hour) and have the driver
leave you at Sergio's house.
