Great Wall from Simatai to JinshanlingApart from the opportunity to hang out with Johanna, the Great Wall had been the main reason I decided to go on a short trip to Beijing. Of course, I also felt like I needed to see the capital of the country I lived in for 4 months; but somehow I knew that would fall into the must-check-off category. More on that separately, if I ever find the time to write it up...
There are many ways to see the wall, and fortunately Johanna (who is even cooler in person than on her blog) and Eliezer (who is every bit as interesting as Johanna had said) were in perfect agreement that the tour to Badaling that was offered by the conference they were attending was the worst one; this is the most touristy part of the wall, so we avoided it.
Instead we went Jin Shan Ling, and hiked along the wall to Si ma tai - following Sheel's recommendation, which was very consistent with the results of some basic online research ... and although I was quite sick that day, it turned out to be the best day of the trip!
Johanna's writing is WAY better than mine, so I will just shamelessly link to her writeup of our Jinshanling-Simatai hike and just post some pictures here. Even though she makes fun of me in it. Which she does well. And she deserves getting to make fun of me, for being such a wonderful friend, even when I whine all day.
